News Writer/Editor (Hourly)

We're looking for a skilled writer with an interest in technology. A successful candidate should have the following qualifications, but will also receive on-the-job training and opportunities commensurate with her/his skills and initiative.

Assist with the weekly development and publication of the UITS Monitor and Newsbit newsletters and related UITS News content. Handle article submissions and reader feedback. Work in cooperation with the UITS News team to research, write, and edit articles related to UITS services, systems, applications, and initiatives. Facilitate review by UITS leadership and subject matter experts. Publish articles to UITS News online and to email subscribers. Distribute articles to additional outlets, particularly social media, as needed. Assist with communications planning, tracking, and archiving via project management software. Address other IT Communications needs as necessary.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills are required. Very strong editing, communication, analytical, project management, and teamwork skills. Ability to prioritize, set and meet deadlines, and take initiative. Accuracy, attention to detail, and willingness to ask questions. Comfort with and curiosity about technology. Ability to use software for word processing, email, spreadsheets, editing, graphics, file transfer, and communications. Must be available to work 4 to 5 regular business hours (8am-5pm) per day, Monday through Friday.

Preferred: Coursework in English, Journalism, Computer Science, Informatics, or related arts and science discipline. Experience with publicity and marketing. Knowledge about UITS services, systems, applications, and initiatives. Familiarity with WordPress, listservs, and SharePoint.
