Principal Online Instructional Designer - PA4IT

Description and Responsibilities:

Plays a crucial role in forming and growing a new technology unit named Online Instructional Design and Development (OIDD) in support of the new IU Online initiative (www.iuonline.edu; see announcement at http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/23061.html).

Acts as a team lead with responsibility for providing oversight and coordination of the activities of instruction designers in OIDD who are full time, part time, as well as the work of outside contractors and vendors providing online course related services. Provides leadership around online instructional design in work with faculty and other instructors; and consults with faculty and staff on a variety of course design issues, including identifying student learning outcomes, fostering active and engaged learning, selecting and implementing appropriate instructional technologies, and assessing student learning.

Participates in the development of project planning and implementation; plans, organizes, and assigns the work activities of instructional designers and conducts periodic performance evaluations; and reviews, evaluates, and approves proposed instructional design approaches. Provides design estimates and documentation for these proposals; guides the use and documentation of instructional design best practices for online courses; and acts as a leader, coach and mentor to less senior staff and provides direction to those staff, leading by example and collaboration.

Knowledgeable about and keeps current with the instructional design literature and other areas of expertise. Works with the OIDD manager to establish and implement practices, procedures, and workflows in conformance with university and UITS strategic and operational plans; the intention is to provide design and development assistance and direct support to faculty and programs creating and conducting online courses. Works closely with the Office of Online Education and both the teaching centers and libraries on all IU campuses and other UITS units in the support of programs and faculty pursuing the creation of online courses.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree and five years of recent relevant experience in online instructional design, working and consulting with faculty or other subject matter experts, and experience with online instruction technology.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Demonstrated abilities in instructional design leadership and development. From both pedagogical and technical perspectives, demonstrate a thorough understanding of best practices for the design and teaching of online courses. Knowledge of educational theories and their application to college teaching; and broad familiarity with methods, approaches, and existing and emerging technologies for supporting faculty in the design, development, and delivery of online learning in higher education. Previous customer service experience; ability to manage professional staff; and excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills necessary for collaborating successfully within a diverse University environment. Excellent organization and presentation skills; self-directed; and able to juggle competing priorities with short deadlines.

Preferred: Master's degree or higher and teaching experience at the college/university level, especially if online. Experience with online learning environments and emerging technologies.
