Welcome to the undergraduate program of the Department of English at Indiana University! Our department is one of
49 programs offered through the College of Arts & Sciences. It is characterized by a flexible and diverse program of
study that includes literature and popular culture, creative writing, film, language study, and composition.
Most classes are small (usually 25-30 students), and they provide ample opportunity for students to discuss literary
and cultural issues and to develop their own creative abilities. The program also offers individualized study,
internships, honors work, and specialization within the major. The English Department is ranked among the top 20 English
programs in the country, based in large part on the scholarly reputation of its faculty. It has also earned more
university teaching awards than any other department in the University.
There are numerous opportunities to become involved in the extra curricular life of the department. There are
sponsored lecture series; readings by visiting writers, faculty and students; films; and an active undergraduate student
group. Two literary journals are published here, including the award-winning Indiana Review. Prizes are awarded
annually for academic achievement, best essays, stories and poems.
