Democratic Deficits in the European Union

As the Institutions of the European Union continue to evolve and grow, average citizens of the EU are contemplating how economic and political union will affect their everyday lives. Even today, decisions that touch the majority of Europeans are being han ded down from the supranational institutions of the EU. Foremost in the minds of many is the question, Who is the voice of the people?

Concern over proper representation within formal EU structures, as well as debate over the limits of national sovereignty, are topics being discussed throughout Europe, . The original rules governing the charter members of the EU are becoming increasingl y incapable of handling the challenges facing the EU in the end of this century and beyond. For these reasons the people of Europe have begun to express their concern over certain democratic deficits which exist under the current system. Protests over eco nomic policies related to monetary union are not uncommon these days with unemployment plagueing so much of Europe. This section is devoted to discussion of such controversial topics, as well as efforts underway to address public concern.
