Entourage 2008 SP1 Bug

In short, we're working on it...

Yesterday, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2008, an update which promises many enchancements over the current version of Office. While all of this is true, many of us within the Support Center have seen this error message when trying to set up the account:

Unable to establish a secure connection to www.indiana.edu because the server name or IP address does not match the name or IP address on the server's certificate.

If you continue, the information you view and send will be encrypted, but will not be secure.

Be advised that we are thoroughly investigating this issue to determine what the cause is and how to fix it, but in the meantime, just know that we're aware of the issue and are working as quickly as we can to come up with a solution. Also, we've found that Entourage will still fuction normally outside of this error, so just click OK, and check back here for our solution.

Netscape reaches End of Life

AOL has discontinued support

Netscape Navigator Logo

We're reporting a little late on this, but Netscape, the browser that was once the most popular in the world, has reached the end of its life. AOL has announced that as of February 1st, the product will no longer be developed or supported.

Though you are free to continue to use it, we strongly recommend that users change browsers, because as time goes on, Netscape may become incapable of displaying several modern websites.

AOL recommends FireFox to replace Netscape, but we'll also tell you that you can use Safari or Camino.

Office 2008 Available!

Click here to go right to it!

It's been a long time waiting for us, but Microsoft has finally released their Volume Licensed version of Office 2008 for Mac. Translation; we finally have Office 2008 Standard to distribute to all IU Affiliates for free! This new version of Office packs in several new features, like My Day, a new program that shows Calendars, Emails and Tasks from Entourage on your desktop, Complete compatibility with Office 2007 files (docx, xlsx, pptx), a cleaned up and well polished user interface, and because it's a Universal Binary, Intel Mac owners will notice phenomenal speed improvements.

As we mentioned above, this software is being made available for free to all IU Students, Faculty and Staff as part of our licensing agreements with Microsoft. The download is hefty, weighing in at about 550 MB, this should take you about 5 to 10 minutes if you're on campus, or 25 minutes if you're off campus with Broadband.

This software suite, like all others we have available, is being hosted on IUWare. Click here to be taken directly to the download page.

Note: This suite requires Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later, a PowerPC G4, G5 or Intel processor, 512 MB of memory (RAM), and 1.5 GB of disk space for a complete install.

iPhone/iPod Touch Icons

A special web tutorial

If you develop a website for IU, then no doubt are you familiar with the iPhone and iPod Touch. These two little devices are showing up in more students hands every day, and that trent seems like it will continue into the future. The most recent software update to these devices allows for creating website shortcuts on the home screen, and we've recently come across an article that will let you create a custom icon when someone adds a site to their screen.

All you have to do is create a 57x57 png (or any larger, square resolution), save it in your WWW directory, and add this line of code to your webpage's header

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/whatever.png"/>

Please be sure to note that we are not providing any official support for this. If you cannot get it to work, please refer to the original article from Apple by clicking here and look for Creating a WebClip Bookmark Icon. Also, bear in mind your file's permissions on Veritas.

IU Printer Locators in Leopard

Special notice for all OS X 10.5 users

Those of you who've purchased Leopard may or may not have noticed that the IU Printer Locators no longer function as they should. UITS is already aware of this issue and we are working on a fix for this.

Unfortunately, in the meantime, all that we can tell you is that we're aware of the problem, and until we figure out exactly what's going on...

There is no way to use the IU Printer Locators with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. We are working as hard as we can to fix this issue, or come up with a workaround, but we cannot give an estimate of how long it will take.

If you wish to print with OS X and you have Leopard, you must transfer your documents onto a Flash drive or your OnCourse CL storage and print from an STC computer. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
