Indiana University Mac/UNIX Team

E-Mail at IU

Because WebMail runs on UNIX, which is the same technology at the core of all Macs, the Mac/UNIX Team also provides full support for WebMail and for Exchange. If you're not sure the difference between these two, just keep in mind that Exchange is something only made available to IU Faculty and Staff (which includes students who work for IU).

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What Web Browsers can I use to check my IU Email?
For best results, we recommend any of the following Web Browsers:

Now, this isn't the exclusive list of browsers you can use, just the ones we recommend for the best results. There are a lot of browsers out there, and most of them will work with our sites, but if you run into issues, go back to anything in this list.

Can I use Entourage, Mail or Thunderbird with my IU Email?
Of course! In fact, any email client that supports IMAP4 will work with our servers. To set up any one of these clients, please refer to our Knowledge base for an instructional setup, or call us and we will happily guide you through it.

I'm leaving IU soon, how long will my email accounts last?
Well, that depends on your status with the University when you leave. Refer to the list below to see how long your accounts may last. Do not, however, consider this a promise, because there are always special cases that may lead to early deactivation:

As an alumnus, are there any options available for me?
If you are an alumnus/alumna of Indiana University, the IU Alumni Association has it's own email service available which will provide you with an @alumni.indiana.edu email address. This system is maintained and supported solely by the IUAA, so we know very little about it. You might also want to consider using GMail, hosted by Google.

Can I purchase access to IU's Email systems?
No, our services are only available to IU Students, Faculty, Staff, and Affiliates and are not for sale to the public.

I logged into WebMail and my inbox is empty! What do I do!?
It sounds very bad to say this, but this error actually pops up somewhat often. Without going too deep into it, the cause is a bad header in one of your emails (i.e. information enclosed within an email about its path and type) causes WebMail to "bug out". The end result is a blank inbox. You don't have to worry though because (A) you'll still receive emails even though it might not appear so and (B) we know exactly how to fix this. Once the bad email is deleted your WebMail inbox will display normally again, but until then, all you have to do is set up a desktop client (i.e. Entourage, Outlook, etc.) and work from there. The only issue is we have no way of knowing which email is causing the problem, so once you set up a desktop client, you'll just have to guess and check.

We've also found out about a bug that exists if you enter your username with capital letters at the login screen. User names must always be in lowercase at IU and while you'll still be able to log into WebMail, you wont see any messages until you log out and log back in.

I don't like IU's Email systems, do I have other options?
Yes! If you would rather use something like MSN, Yahoo, GMail or some other service you have, you are more than welcome to. We allow you to forward all email delivered to your IU addresses to be sent elsewhere. A couple things you should know though;

If you're ready to set up the forward, click here to read through the instructions.
