Dorm Room Menace By Lacey Gillotte When I told my family that I was going to IU, the first comment I received was from my Uncle Pete, advising me to lock my door at night. When I enquired about the strange advice, he told me a story he had heard when he went to school at U of M (Michigan). When he was a freshman, he had a friend named Charlie Thaxton, who had transferred from IU his sophomore year. The story my Uncle Pete heard from Charlie was of a girl named Susan Drake, a sophomore at IU. Susan lived in the dorms and had the only microwave on her floor. She trusted the girls on her floor, so she kept her door unlocked in case someone wanted to use her microwave. However, she usually locked her door at night, so that no one would interrupt her sleep. One Friday night, Susan went to a party at a friend's house to hear her favorite band play. She loved the band, so she stayed late to listen and chat. At about 1 am, she decided that she was too tired to stay. A friend of hers walked her home, and both noticed the popcorn in her microwave, popped but untouched. They thought nothing of it, since people forgot food in her microwave all the time. She figured she'd just leave her door unlocked that night in case they remembered and wanted it. Susan was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. In the middle of the night, she woke up to a sort of crunching noise. Opening her eyes and groggily rolling over, she was terrified to find that someone had been sitting at her desk, eating popcorn, watching her as she slept. As soon as the person noticed she was awake, they got up and left the room, without making a sound, leaving the popcorn on the desk. Susan got up to lock her door, and praying that it was all a dream, went back to sleep. In the morning, when she awoke, she saw the popcorn on the desk, and realized that she hadn't been dreaming of the person watching her. The half eaten popcorn on her desk was proof. This is a true story. This actually happened. Charlie Thaxton, Uncle Pete's friend, knew her personally.
