My major research interests include Irish culture of the 19th and 20th centuries, drama and theatre, and higher education, especially the discipline of English and graduate studies. I have recently completed a book based on the at times ghostly presence of Samuel Beckett in Irish literature, Beckett and Contemporary Irish Writing (2009); and my anthology When They Weren’t Doing Shakespeare: Essays on Nineteenth-Century British and American Theatre will come out in a new edition later in 2010. I have recently written on drama and theatre in 19th-century America and Britain, especially on later Victorian drama’s relationship to an emergent modern drama and modernity more generally. My new project on immigrant literature from 1880-1945 will include a chapter on late-Victorian working class theatre.
