Polycom PVX is the latest version of Polycom desktop videoconferencing software. Until now, it was necessary to buy a Polycom ViaVideo camera in order to use Polycom's desktop videoconferencing software. Polycom is discontinuing the ViaVideo cameras, so PVX is desigined to work with a Web cam of your choosing. If you don't already own a ViaVideo and wish to install the new PVX software for use with a Web cam, please see the PVX Installation Guide.
This guide is intended for users who already have a Polycom ViaVideo camera. It describes the method for downloading, installing, and configuring a special version of the PVX software that will work only with your ViaVideo camera.
Uninstalling the Current ViaVideo Software
Before installing the PVX software, you'll need to uninstall your existing ViaVideo software.
-
From your computer's Control Panel (e.g., Start menu --> Settings -->
Control Panel), double click Add/Remove Programs.
-
From the list of installed programs, highlight Polycom ViaVideo and click Change/Remove.
-
Choose Remove, click Next, and follow the onscreen instructions to remove the ViaVideo software from your computer.
Getting the PVX Software
To download the special version of PVX software that will work with your ViaVideo camera, go to the PVX Download page and log in with your IU network username and password.
Installing the PVX Software
-
When you've downloaded the PVX software, double click the PVX_6_0_2_camera_update.exe icon
on your desktop and follow the onscreen instructions.
Configuring the PVX Software
-
To begin configuring the PVX software, turn on your ViaVideo camera, double click the Polycom PVX icon
on your desktop and follow the onscreen instructions.

When prompted for your Name, enter your name as it will appear in the video conferencing address book.
Please use the following format to conform with the IU address book naming convention:
Lastname, Firstname (IU network username) (see example below)
For the H.323 Extension, please see the Indiana University H.323 Dialing Plan.
If you'd like the PVX software to start each time your computer starts, check the box next to Auto-start application in background.
-
On the Directory Setup page, delete all existing entries.
On the first line under Global Directory, enter gab.iu.edu and check the box next to Register with this Server (see example below).
-
On the VideoMail Setup page, click Next.

If your computer has multiple input lines, you'll be prompted to select the input into which you've plugged your ViaVideo.
We recommend using the Line In whenever possible. If the ports on your computer are color-coded, the Line In port is typically blue.
-
In the Audio Setup window, choose the method you're using to connect the ViaVideo camera's audio output to your computer.
This is usually Audio Cable Connected to the Audio-In Port on the PC.
-
In the Network Setup window, in most cases you should keep the default Use the PC's Local IP Address.
If you are using the PVX software behind a NAT (e.g., a home router), you'll need to choose Use the External (WAN) IP Address.
