Leadership Development

Our office provides opportunities and resources for those faculty members who choose to become involved in academic administration. The Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs convenes a year-long seminar for academic associate deans from all 17 schools and colleges on the Bloomington campus. We also offer two workshops for department chairs: one is focused on procedures for recruitment, reappointment, promotion and tenure; the other provides guidance with administrative, personnel and leadership problems routinely faced by chairs.

Our campus efforts to develop academic administrative leaders benefit from IU’s participation in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago. For example, each year, we select four Academic Leadership Fellows to attend a series of seminars with their counterparts from other CIC Universities, which provides opportunities to consider how IU Bloomington differs from peer institution in its administrative structure and institutional culture. Several department chairs are also selected to participate in the CIC Department Executive Officers seminar.
