Bryan 111
(812) 855-9973

Gieryn is Rudy Professor of Sociology and adjunct professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1979, and has been at IU ever since---with visiting professorships at Cornell University, Nankai University (Tianjin, China) and Twente University (Holland), and a year at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. Gieryn does research on the cultural authority of science and on the significance of place for human behavior and social change. His book Cultural Boundaries of Science: Credibility On the Line (University of Chicago Press, 1999) won the Robert K. Merton Book Award from the Section on Science, Knowledge and Technology of the American Sociological Association (the prize is named after Gieryn's mentor at Columbia). His new book-project is titled Truth Spots: Emplacing Legitimate Belief, and it includes a study of "oracular tourism" at Delphi in Greece.

Sara Pryor

Associate Vice Provost
Bryan 111
(812) 855-9973

Sara C. Pryor is Provost Professor of Atmospheric Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington. She received her Ph.D. from the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, UK, in 1992. She was a P.D.F. in Atmospheric Science during 1993-1995 at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Pryor has served on the Indiana University faculty since 1995.

Dr. Pryor has published over 90 journal articles in her two primary research foci:

  1. Physical climatology, specifically climate change and variability that involve climate downscaling and regional manifestations of climate change and variability. Sara has edited two books on regional climate change, and recently she was named to the new National Climate Assessment and Development Committee, convened by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to help the U.S. government prepare for and deal with climate change. The committee, composed of 40 of America's best climate scientists and 13 ex-officio members representing federal agencies, has been tasked with developing a National Climate Assessment report no later than June 2013.
  2. Atmospheric chemistry and atmosphere-surface exchange of reactive gases and particles. Sara has conducted extensive research on biogeochemical cycling. She was a participant in the international BACCI and EUCAARI projects on atmosphere-surface exchange and atmospheric particle-climate linkages and is currently participating in the NCAR-led BEACHON (Bio-hydro-atmosphere interactions of Energy, Aerosols, Carbon, H2O, Organics and Nitrogen) research program.

Dr. Pryor is contributing author to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) (Chapter 'Wind Energy'), editor for the foremost atmospheric science journal--the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, and is currently engaged by the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) for her research on links between climate change, extreme events and critical energy infrastructure. Pryor has served on numerous advisory panels for the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense and European Union, and is currently PI or co-PI on 3 grants from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Pryor was recently appointed as associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs at IU Bloomington. In addition to her position at IU, she is a visiting distinguished professor at the Atmospheric Environment Institute at the University of Aarhus in Denmark as well as senior scientist with the Department of Wind Energy and Atmospheric Physics at the Risø National Laboratory in Denmark.

Bryan 111
(812) 855-2809

Massey is the Dean's Research Professor and Professor of Information Systems at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. She received her Ph.D. in Decision Sciences & Engineering Systems from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1991 and joined Indiana University in 1996. Prior to her academic career she worked for General Electric and IBM. Her research centers on how information technology can be used to support individual, group, and ultimately organizational performance, with a particular focus collaborative activities in knowledge-intensive business processes. Her work has garnered corporate, foundation, and federal funding and she serves on the editorial boards of leading professional journals. In addition to her research activities, she has been the recipient of IU Board of Trustee's Distinguished Teaching Award, and several Kelley MBA Distinguished Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards and Innovative Teaching Awards, and she has been recognized as an Outstanding MBA Faculty by Business Week's Guide to the Best Business Schools. Prior administrative roles include serving as the Information Systems Department Chair and Associate Chairperson of the Systems and Accounting Graduate Programs.
