Teaching Practices

Faculty interested in learning about and improving their teaching and their students’ learning have many resources to draw upon at IU Bloomington. Dedicated and knowledgeable staff can help with course-related issues, including classroom teaching techniques, assignment design, evaluations, classroom graphics, and learning experiences through community service.

IU Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing (BEST)
Helps faculty, graduate students, and administrators with course assessment, evaluation, and testing through individual and departmental consultation, research and development, course evaluations, machine scoring, and administration of placement and standardized tests.

Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL)
Assists faculty and graduate students in and out of the classroom with the development, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, technology, and course innovations. CITL offers specialized workshops and grants related to course design and the implementation of active learning strategies..

Writing Program (CITL)
Provides consultation to faculty members and graduate students on the use of writing in classes, offers course development grants, conducts research into the efficacy of writing instruction, and operates Writing Tutorial Services (WTS), which offers guidance to students at all stages of the writing process.

Service Learning Program (CITL)
Assists in connecting community engagement with course-based learning, coordinating service-learning and community-based research for the Bloomington campus in cooperation with school-based and co-curricular initiatives.

Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET)
A community of faculty dedicated to and recognized for excellence in teaching and learning. FACET advocates pedagogical innovation, inspires growth and reflection, cultivates the scholarship of teaching and learning and fosters personal renewal in the commitment to student learning through a wide-ranging program of faculty development, pedagogical exploration, and university service.

Instructional Consulting, Kelley School of Business
Provides various instructional support services aimed at assisting faculty in their development as teachers, as well as expertise in pedagogy and instructional theory.

Instructional Consulting, School of Education
Provides support and consultation in the use and application of emerging pedagogies and technologies for learning, and the presentation, design and delivery of digital media and other course content.
