Using the Internet to Find Information

There are times when we want to learn more about something. We can learn more by trying to find information on our topic. This is called researching. Sometimes we will look for information using a search engine, like Ask Jeeves for Kids. Sometimes we will use a Web site for a company (like Crayola) or an information source (like the Herald Times).

In order to use the web to find information we first need to think where the answer might be. If we are not sure a search engine can be helpful. Sometimes, though, we may have an idea where the information might be. We can use the address of a webpage or the URL (Universal Resource Locator). For example, if we want to know about Dominos Pizza we could go to their webpage at http://www.dominos.com. To enter URL click on the box labeled "Address" in your web browser. To read the URL of a page you found you can look in the same box (use the arrow keys to scroll through if it is too long).

Sometimes we can find information by using a Web Guide, like Yahooligans! to find information based on type. Like we could find the webpage for Cartoon Network by searching for it on Yahooligans! or by looking in the TV category and then the Networks subcategory.

You can try to see how well you can figure out where information is by doing the scavanger hunt. There are also other scavenger hunts on the web that you can try after you finish our scavenger hunt. You can print out the scavenger hunt and then use the links on this page to help you search for information.

You can also do a Ask Jeeves for Kids search by filling in box below with your question and hitting the button next to the box.
