As the time of our trip draws near, you are probably
excitedly anticipating all of the adventures that await you. With a little
preparation you can improve the quality of your experiences and soften the shock
of a new language, culture and "family."
This website is designed to
help you with those preparations and answer any questions you (or your parents)
might have.
A great place to start is the homepage of our partner school Friedrich-Ebert Gymnasium . Try reading it
in German first. Sit down with your dictionary and familiarize yourself with
your upcoming surroundings and any new vocabulary words. If your parents are
interested in looking at the site but can't read German, do a search for our
partner school through Google.com. They provide a translation of the site. It's
a rough translation but will suffice for their needs.
Then get to know
landscape, history and current events in and around Hamburg by going to its home page . It's a good
idea to make a list of sights and/or attractions around the city you would like
to see. This will show your family that you are interesting in their city and
excited to be there- plus it will provide you with the opportunity to have some
input into your family's excursions.
Finally, it's time to think about packing. Over packing can be a real hassle
for you (schlepping heavy suitcases around through airports is worse than it
sounds) and your host family (you can almost bet they won't be picking
you up in an SUV). Under packing is no one's idea of a good time, either. I have
prepared a list for you of do's
and don'ts for packing .

other questions, you can always email me at hjanders@indiana.edu.
