| Our class consists of 23 students and two teachers - one for history and one for literature. This is the first time a class like this has been offered to average and below-average students at Broad Ripple High School. We are all very devoted to what we do in our special two-hour block; the students and teachers take a great deal of pride in being unique. Almost all of the students have been successful in this program and everyone has learned a lot about the United States, its cultures, social movements, politics, and people. We have heard voices that have inspired us to become more active and concerned with what goes on in our nation. In October, we heard of a program called Close-Up Washington, through which students travel to Washington DC for a week and participate in activities which mock and even interact with those of national politicians. We decided that we wanted to go, and even though most of our students hail from families that could not afford the $12,500 tuition, we knew we could make it happen. By February, we had done it!! In these last weeks before our trip, we are busy studying so that we can represent our school and community well. And there are lots of nervous and curious students who have never been on a plane before!! |
