INTRODUCTION

What time of year do most students buy shoes?  Why do people tend to purchase more bicycles during a certain month in the year?  How do companies decide when the best time to put a video game system on sale is?

Questions like these are asked by organizations every day, and many companies depend on TRENDS* to find the answers. Being able to understand and interpret trends can help a company to not only satisfy its customers, but to also make good PROFITS*.  Companies that do not pay attention to trends, on the other hand, often experience failure.

This webquest was designed for you to simulate starting your own lemonade stand business and make decisions for its success or failure based on your ability to interpret and understand trends.  Get ready for a fun and exciting challenge in the wonderful world of business and statistics.

REVIEWING THE DATA

Take a look at your Daily Record Sheet and Graphs.  This information can be used to help you make better profits with greater customer satisfaction the second time you participate in Lemonade Stand. You and your partner should contemplate the following questions:

Which days did I make the greatest profits? What caused these days to be so profitable?

Which days did I receive the greatest customer satisfaction? What factors affected the outcome?

Which recipe did my customers seem to enjoy the most? What is the mode* for my price/cup, lemons/pitcher, and sugar/pitcher.  Were these numbers effective?

What range of temperatures are my lemons likely to spoil and ice likely to melt at the close of the day.

Which weather forecasts did I receive the most potential customers?

What days will customers be willing to pay more? Are there any trends?

What days will customers not be willing to pay more? Are thee any trends?

You can even come up with you own questions that may help you to make some sound decisions that will help your business.

CONCLUSION

By the end of this activity you will have practiced a number of different skills, which include, finding the mean in sets of data, using the mode and range in sets of data, creating physical representations of data, using that data to determine trends, and make decisions based on those trends.  The more you practice this activity, the better you get at it.  Keep at it, and you will find that practice truly does make perfect.
