Indiana University Bloomington

A big difference in my life

Dick Lugar, U.S. Senator for Indiana

A legion of Hoosiers have mentioned the profound and inspiration influence of Herman Wells on Indiana University and individual students.

Herman Wells made a big difference in my life. He chaired the Indiana Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee in 1953, which included President Fred Hovde of Purdue and Byron Trippett of Wabash, and sent me to the scholarship finals.

In the past 46 years, President Wells wrote about that selection and we reminisced often about our first meeting that day and all of the ways it led to opportunities to work together for Indiana and for our country. I have counted on his counsel and generous enthusiasm and I will miss him very much.
