Indiana University Bloomington

Touched my life like no other person

Christian Carroll

As Union Board President in 1990, I would make several appointments with Chancellor Wells at his office on campus. I will update him on what the board was doing, discuss any events I would want him to attend, but mostly I would go and just let him talk. I loved hearing him tell me about his days on Union Board, as a student, and of course as president of Indiana University. I was fascinated by his life, and even took a seminar on his book with Dean Richard McKaig. His stories enlightened me. His humor always was sharp, just like his memories of 60-70 years passed.

His love for Indiana University, and his fond memories of which he shared with me, always made me leave his office smiling with joy and motivation. To this day, I will never forget our private talks, of his contagious smile, and especially Chancellor Wells as Santa Claus each Christmas ringing his bell with excitement in his heart. Herman B Wells touched my life like no other person has, and for that I am grateful to have known him. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
