Indiana University Bloomington

Heaped affection on this man

Thomas E. Myers, associate director, IU ARTI

Although I encountered our beloved chancellor occasionally while pursuing two degrees at Indiana University, my most lasting memory of Herman B Wells will surely be his visit to Tech Connection '98 at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center in October 1998.

I had the great honor to escort him and his assistant through the hall for most of an hour, highlighting a few of the more interesting exhibits. Although he had difficulty hearing my explanations, it was obvious that the technologies on display both interested and fascinated him. Everywhere we went, exhibitors and attendees alike heaped affection on this man who meant so much to the community and to Indiana University. Yet, in the midst of all the high-tech machinery, computers, and gizmos, Chancellor Wells had us pause longest so that he could shake hands with each member of the Bloomington High School South solar bike team!
