Dr. Wells told this story himself
My favorite story I have heard circulated epitomizing Dr. Wells' charisma is this:
Supposedly, Dr. Wells told this story himself. He was speaking to an Indiana University audience. He related, "As I was bestowing a medal around the neck of IU's oldest living alum, I leaned down to put the medal around her neck. I heard her softly humming 'Indiana, My Indiana.'" The group went wild with enthusiastic response. When he sat down after telling this story, he leaned over to his podium partner and said, "Do you think that was too schmaltzy?"
