Indiana University Bloomington

Summer Grant

Munich, Germany. Paul Pass.

Faculty members may apply to WEST for summer grants in three categories: Language Grants, Curriculum Development Grants and Research Grants. All grants will be offered on a competitive basis for summer 2010. The amount of each grant is $6,000 (before taxes) plus fringe benefits. All applicants should submit a Faculty Summer Grant Application, a current curriculum vitae, and additional information (see below). Please also submit information about *all* internal and external grants and fellowships that you have received in the past three years. We ask the fellowship recipients for 2010 to accept only one summer fellowship or summer grant for 2010. These grants are not intended for graduate assistance.

Language Grant

Applicants should include information outlining their need for language acquisition or maintenance and their specific study plans (this aspect of the application is crucial). If the language is needed for a research project, include an abstract of the project. If the language is needed for teaching, outreach, or international collaboration, please include adequate descriptions.

Curriculum Development Grant

Applicants should submit a letter from their chair agreeing that the course to be developed will be taught on a regular basis in the future and will be cross-listed and open to students both in the home department and in West European Studies; a proposal outlining in general terms the kind of disciplinary fields and subjects that will be included in the course, as well as a discussion of the appropriate level to be assigned to the course; a brief schedule of the applicant's teaching assignments, noting (with the chair's approval) when the new course will be proposed to the university and introduced into the curriculum, as well as how often the new course will be offered; and a representative sample of the instructor's past course offerings.

Especially welcome are applications from the professional schools and/or topics falling into these five categories:

  1. European Integration and Markets
  2. The Making of European Identities
  3. European Arts and Culture
  4. Faiths and Ideas in Europe
  5. Europe in Today's World

Research Grant

Applicants should also submit two letters of support underlining the importance of the research undertaken (one may be from the chair of the applicant's department; one may be the letter from the referee or colleague if it addresses the research topic), and a detailed proposal outlining the applicant's work to date on the project and how the research funding will be employed.

EXTENDED DEADLINE: February 19, 2010. Awards announced in beginning of March.
