WEST Graduate Assistant

Employment in the WEST office and/or working on special projects

WEST employs 2 graduate assistants each year. Applications are due in the spring of each year.

Hours: The position requires twenty (20) hours of work per week.
Stipend: Approx $13,450, paid over a 10-month period.
Tuition: Fees paid for up to twelve (12) credit hours in fall and spring semesters, and a total of six (6) credit hours for both summer sessions (at the graduate rate) for courses related to the student’s degree

The Graduate Assistant is responsible for helping to maintain the WEST office, as well as assisting with various projects undertaken by the department. Some of the tasks are ongoing; others occur periodically throughout the school year. Each Graduate Assistant has primary responsibility for a major project, which may be one of the following:

  • Technical Assistance: database maintenance, web work, email list management
  • Grant Projects: compilation and collection of data for various grant reports, collection of data for reports, edit newsletter
  • Outreach: assist with various educational and public outreach projects, event organization, preparation of text for outreach materials, publicity
  • In addition, each Graduate Assistant is expected to assist with office duties, such as answering telephones and taking complete phone messages, making photo copies, sorting mail, scheduling appointments, and assisting the Director, Assistant Director, and Administrative Coordinator with projects as needed.

The ideal candidates will be team-oriented, able to multi-task, work independently, and manage projects. Knowledge derived from travel or study abroad in Europe and of one or more West European languages, and an interest in European issues are desirable. In addition, sound organizational and writing skills, the ability to communicate effectively, as well as the ability to use computers and use or learn various programs is required. WEST currently uses Microsoft Office programs, Outlook email, Excel, and Dreamweaver/Contribute. The ideal candidate will have either technical/web-related skills or research/writing-based skills. Priority will be given to students who are pursuing a graduate degree in the College of Arts and Sciences related to the study of Europe. Additionally, WEST MA students are automatically considered for the positions upon admittance to the program.
