Alison is from Morgantown, West Virginia. She graduated from West Virginia University in December 2003 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in International Studies, German, and Environmental Geoscience. She then studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she earned her Master of Arts in Germanic Languages and Literatures in May 2006. She has worked as an intern in Western Europe on several occasions: with the West Virginia Development Office in Munich (2003), with the German Federal Foreign Office's Task Force on Environmental and Biopolitical Issues in Berlin (2005), with the Friends of the Earth-Limousin in Limoges, France (2007), and with the US Embassy in Berlin (2008). Her research interests include European Union environmental policy with an emphasis on renewable energies, emissions trading, and organic agriculture; citizens’ environmental movements and activism in Germany, France, and Poland; the Green Party of Germany; and state nuclear energy policies across Europe.
Julia Broadway comes from Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in English, and spent her junior year studying abroad at the University of York in Great Britain. She is a 2009-2010 FLAS fellow in Italian, and her research interests include Muslim immigration in Western Europe, issues of national identity, and organized crime in Italy.
Ryan Cooper is from Brownsburg, Indiana. He graduated from Ball State University in 2009 with majors in Geography and German. During the spring of 2007 Ryan studied German language and culture at Justus-Liebig Universität in Giessen, Germany. His research interests include post-1945 German history, mapping Germanic languages and dialects, and transportation development, networks, and issues.
Jessica Forbes is from Louisville, Kentucky. She received her BA from Murray State University with a double major in International Affairs and French. She spent the spring semester of her sophomore year in Dijon, France studying at the Université de Bourgone. She also spent the summer between her junior and senior year in Bregenz, Austria studying Austrian and German history. Her research interests include the current and past Franco-German relationship and immigration issues in France and Germany.
Jason Gonzales is from Chesterton, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Major Gonzales is a Foreign Area Officer in the US Army with over 15 years of military service. His previous assignment was with the Defense Attaché Office in Rome, Italy while he earned an Italian Master of Arts in International Strategic Military Studies from University of Milan. His research interests include Security Studies, International Relations, European Security Defense Policy, and the future of NATO.
Robert Larsen
Bob pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and completed medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Following residency training and five years of private practice in Erie, Pennsylvania he spent 14 years of his military medical career in Germany. The West European Studies Program has provided an ideal opportunity to pursue his interests in European intellectual history, the German healthcare system, and the utilization of evidence in policy making.
Christine McGinley
Christine McGinley is from Indianapolis, Indiana and completed her undergraduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. Highlights at Indiana University include majors in Spanish and Political Science, as well as studies in Literature. During her undergraduate career, Christine studied Spanish in both Spain and Mexico. Christine is currently working on a joint Master's Degree in West European Studies and Public Affairs concentrating in Comparative and International Affairs. Christine's research interests include regionalism and Non governmental associations within the EU, as well as issues relating to Muslims in Western Europe. This semester Christine plans to be a Spanish associate instructor for European Issues in a Foreign Language.
Kallan is originally from Colorado and completed her undergraduate degree at Hastings College in Nebraska. She received her BA in International Business and German in 2008 and also studied abroad in Austria, Germany, and Northern Ireland during her undergraduate career. Her research interests include EU eastern enlargement and integration, European identity, and the German language. She is currently pursuing dual Master's degrees in West European Studies and International and Comparative Affairs through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs here at IU.
Tristan Reitz
Tristan is from Angola, Indiana and completed his undergraduate work at Purdue University in Kinesiology with a minor in Spanish and English. On a physical therapy internship in Spain he discovered his love of European history and culture and decided to pursue this interest in Graduate School. Tristan's research interests are Muslim immigration and integration into Western Europe, and Spanish politics.
Sonja Rother
Sonja Rother was born in Germany and raised in Luxembourg. She completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Italy, where she gained a Master in Translation and Conference Interpretation from the University of Trieste. She has always been interested in European languages and culture and is in her first year in the WEST program. Her main research interests are European history, languages, and German immigrants in the US.
Alma Torres Rojo
Alma is from Mexico City, Mexico where she completed her undergraduate degree of Public Accounting at Universidad La Salle. She started working in auditing and developed an interest in international business and the pharmaceutical industry, after working and traveling in Latin America and Europe. She is a Fulbright scholar in the joint program MBA and MA in WEST and her research interests include FDI, international finance and international business management. Last year Alma was a Spanish associate instructor for European Issues in a Foreign Language.
Tia Trueblood
Tia is from a dairy farm in Salem, Indiana. After receiving Bachelor's degrees in Psychology and French from Purdue University, she worked as an English Lectrice at L'Université de Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse, France. Tia began graduate studies at Indiana University in the Spring of 2007, with interests in European higher education reform and the Bologna Process.
Having grown up in Indiana, Gillian completed her undergraduate degrees at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and is now pursuing her Master’s degree in West European Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She received a bachelor’s degree in both International Business and French having studied in England, France, Australia and New Zealand. Currently, Gillian is interested in learning the Italian language as well as researching the higher education systems within the European Union.
Originally from Minneapolis, MN Luke graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2006 with majors in Global Studies and Political Science. Luke spent part of his undergraduate career in study at the University of Freiburg and European Union Center in Freiburg, Germany. From 2006-2008 Luke continued to pursue coursework at the University of Minnesota and the University of Iceland focussing on Scandinavian languages and history. Luke's current research interests include European Union Economic and Political Integration, European Union Foreign Policy Integration, and Securities Studies.
