HD Radio - What is It?

More Talk! More Music! More WFIU!

HD Radio technology is new and allows WFIU to split our signal into two channels—HD-1 and HD-2. HD Radio is a digital technology that offers more programming choices and dramatically better digital sound quality. With an HD tuner, WFIU becomes 2 stations in one.

HD Radio is only available to WFIU listeners on 103.7 fm in Monroe County and surrounding areas (Nashville, Martinsville, and Spencer). The coverage area is smaller than our analog coverage area.

For now, your regular FM radio will continue to work just fine—but the potential for exciting new services might encourage you to try out an HD Radio sooner rather than later.

So here are four reasons to invest in an HD tuner and start getting even more out of radio.

  1. Two WFIU Channels Instead of One
With an HD Radio tuner, you will be able to hear two WFIU’s instead of one. You may have though public radio already had diverse content, but with digital radio you have even more choice of shows. Listener’s who enjoy talk radio will be able to listen to more talk, those who want more music will receive more music.

  2. CD Quality Sound
HD Radio broadcasts are clearer and the quality of sound is improved.

  3. It’s New Technology
Like color television and CDs, HD Radio improves the familiar experience and is here to stay.

  4. No Monthly Fee
Just like listening to analog radio, HD Radio is free. It doesn’t require a subscription like satellite radio, so get all of these benefits for a one-time purchase of an HD tuner—and that’s it!

Before you purchase a new radio, be sure to consider HD Radio. We suggest you check out the NPR shop and Amazon.

To receive HD Radio programming, you will need to purchase a receiver or radio capable of receiving HD Radio. HD Radio radios are available in tabletop, component, car, and hybrid car/home versions. The list of manufacturers includes: Boston Acoustics, Accurian by RadioShack, Cambridge Soundworks, Polk Audio, Sangean and more.

NPR Labs reccomends the Boston Acoustics' Recepter Radio HD. Additionally, WFIU Chief Engineer John Shelton recommends the Visteon HD Jump Radio.

To receive the new digital HD Radio signal you MUST have good, solid reception of the analog FM signal. If you have that, then you should be able to receive the HD Radio signal. Purchasing an HD Radio will not improve your reception of the analog FM.
