MUSIC Z120 - Music in Multimedia

The purpose of this class is to provide an overview and general understanding of how to develop a multimedia project using specific software. Students will acquire basic proficiency in interactive and linear media and will be introduced to composition, waveform editing, and digital video editing. Using Macintosh technology, students will apply new skills and incorporate media elements (photos, text, audio and interactivity) in a comprehensive final project.

REQUIRED COURSE PACKET: Course Packet includes readings from Digital Audio by Peter Kirn, Sight and Sound by Herbert Zettl, and Crafting Multimedia Text by Barbara Moran and transcriptions from music journal articles.

EQUIPMENT: You will need multiple DVD-Rs, a USB DRIVE (or 1 GB portable drive) and HEADPHONES with a 1/4 jack.

CLASS STRUCTURE
LECTURE/LAB - A lecture will be given that introduces new skills. In-class exercises will reinforce the concept. A one to two day lab assignment will follow the lecture. Students will be required to complete each lab using the required software application on Macintosh platform. There will be one exam at the end of all labs.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT - (Remainder of Semester)
OPEN LAB TIME / PROJECT DEVELOPMENT - Students will produce a multimedia project based on criteria. Students will write a proposal that explains their project idea. Open lab time will be given for research, to collect supporting assets, and for project production.

Equipment Available

Headphones are available for check-out on the first floor of the music library for your convenience (you must have a current student id card).

Video Camera Equipment is available to IUB students for up to 48 hours at a time. Call 855-1650 or visit the Kent Cooper Media Room. Editing software for these cameras is available at the library only.
