EXAMS -

Each of the four exams is worth 50 points. All tests are entirely multiple-choice (bring a #2 pencil!) and follow the same format: 20 questions taken from the lectures & reading assignments followed by 30 points of listening/music identification. For the 30 points in the listening section of each exam, you will hear 15 excerpts (45 seconds to a minute long) from the tapes covered and be expected to identify the artist and song title for each. To check your results, go to http://www.indiana.edu/~best, click on Post'Em Students and follow directions. If you have questions about your scores, please contact Eric.

Makeup tests will NOT be given to anyone who does not have a written excuse from a doctor or the University. Anyone who qualifies for a makeup should contact Mike before the next class meeting to arrange a makeup time.

ATTENDANCE -

Attendance is required. Pop quizzes are always a possibility!

LISTENING TO THE MUSIC -

1. All of the Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart and Residents CD’s from which your listening list was taken are in the William and Gayle Cook Music Library in the new Simon music building (located at the corner of Third & Jordan). All of them can be accessed (in their entirety) online from one of the IBM PC computer stations on the first floor or third floor. Headphones are attached to the workstations. From the Program Manager, find Communications and double click on it. Next, double click on Netscape Navigator. Find Course Reserves on the Music Library’s homepage and click once. Here you should be able to locate Z320 – HOLLINDEN – SPRING 2004. Click once on Music Library Reserve Recordings. Scroll down to find the CD you desire and click once on Listen to Online Copy. Please ask the library staff for more information and/or help.

2. A complete set of the listening list CD’s is on reserve in the William and Gayle Cook Music Library. Reserve materials are found just past the far end of the check out desk. Ask the librarians for help if you have difficulty locating what you need. You can listen to them in the library.

OFFICE HOURS & DIRECTIONS -

Office hours are 6:00 to 6:50 Tuesdays and Thursdays. My office is in the basement of the Music Annex (MAB014 - the B stands for basement) which is the round building stuck onto the back of the Music School on 3rd St. You need to enter the round building at the northernmost entrance (farthest away from 3rd St.) and go downstairs. You'll find yourself in a room full of huge bass cases. Go through the double doors and my office is right in front of you.

HOW TO DO WELL IN THIS CLASS -

1. Always come to class. Take detailed notes on the lectures and study them every day.

2. Listen to the music more than you think you need to. Put listening time into your daily schedule. Take notes on the songs (what they sound like, mean to you or remind you of) and study those notes away from the tapes. Memorize the listening list (don't worry about the release dates) so that you always know who did what song. Don't delay - you cannot cram for the listening section!

3. Read the book and take notes on the chapters. Realize that you won't be tested on artists mentioned in the chapters who are not found on the class tapes.
