Mr. Pratt Retires as Professor of Music and Director of University Bands at the end of the 2017-18 Academic Year

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Department of Bands/Wind Conducting wish to announce the retirement of Professor of Music and Director of University Bands Stephen Pratt at the end of the 2017-2018 academic year. Professor Pratt‘s career spans 34 years as a faculty member of the Jacobs School of Music.

Prior to his appointment at Indiana University, Professor Pratt taught for nine years in the public-school district of Sturgis, Michigan.

In his career at Indiana University he has conducted all of the wind band ensembles and taught nearly every course offered by the department. Since 2005 he has conducted the internationally renowned Wind Ensemble, and, in addition, has taught graduate wind conducting and wind band history. His graduate conducting students (MM, DM, PhD) hold prominent positions at some of the leading colleges and universities in the United States and internationally, as well as at outstanding high schools and academies.

His appearances with the Indiana University Wind Ensemble in the past several years include a showcase concert in Carnegie Hall, the CBDNA national conventions in Nashville, Tennessee, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as the CBDNA divisional convention in Normal, Illinois, the Music Educators National Conference national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the American Bandmasters Association national convention in Indianapolis.

Commissions undertaken in the last few years include associations with a number of composers including, Samuel Adler, Robert Beaser, James Beckel, Kevin Bobo, William Bolcom, Steven Bryant, David DeBoor Canfield, David Dzubay, David Maslanka, Eric Ewazen, Don Freund, Michael Mower, Cindy McTee Clint Needham, Joel Puckett, Andre Previn, Andrew Rindfleisch, Chris Rutkowski, Michael Schelle, David Ward-Steinman, James Stephenson, Benjamin Dean Taylor, Frank Ticheli, Kevin Walczyk, Dana Wilson, Gregory Youtz and others.

His collaborations with soloists performing with the IU Wind Ensemble included most of the wind and percussion faculty at the Jacobs School of Music and other distinguished guests, including Kevin Bobo, marimba, Bruce Bransby, double bass, James Campbell, clarinet, Chih-Yi Chen, piano, Anthony J. Cirone, timpani, Thomas Drew, tenor, Peter Ellefson, trombone, Don Freund, piano, Ashley Garritson, cello, Brian Horne, tenor, Steve Houghton, percussion, Howard Klug, clarinet, Carl Lenthe, trombone, William Ludwig, bassoon, Kathryn Lukas, flute, John McCabe, piano, Steven Mead, euphonium, Otis Murphy, saxophone, Jeff Nelsen, horn, Daniel Perantoni, tuba, Jonathan Ruck, cello, John Rommel, trumpet, M. Dee Stewart, bass trombone, Linda Strommen, oboe, John Tafoya, timpani, Joey Tartell, trumpet, and Thomas Walsh, saxophone.

In 1993, he was a national recipient of The Distinguished Service to Music Medal awarded by Kappa Kappa Psi, the national collegiate band honorary organization. In 1998, he was honored with the Outstanding Bandmaster Award by the Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Mu. In 2001, he was honored with the Outstanding University Music Educator Award, given by the Indiana Music Educators Association. In 2014, he was awarded the James B. Calvert Outstanding Music Educator Award. He has maintained an active career as guest conductor and clinician across the nation and internationally.
