Graduates in Instructional Systems Technology (GIST) is an organization devoted to supporting the professional development and welfare of students in the Instructional Systems Technology program at Indiana University, spanning distance and residential programs in Instructional Systems Technology and Adult Education.
GIST is a professional community that facilitates participation in social activities and professional development. This is an organization that is intended to serve all members of the IST community, past and present, residential and distance, faculty and students. In order to continue as a robust support to IST students and alumni, the organization draws upon volunteer support of the IST community.
The organization originated as a Student Audio-Visual Association (SAVA) in 1957; the current name was adopted about 1980. A major needs analysis was conducted by Jeannette R. Olson in 1987, leading to significant changes in the organization’s operations. Another internal analysis in 1995 led to further changes, particularly regarding the relations among GIST and local chapters of ISPI and AECT. A Constitution and By-Laws were adopted in October 1999.
