How do I get started?

Click Here for Guidance on which CITI course to complete

  • You will be asked if you have an IU Network ID and Password.
    • If you select “no” you will be directed to the CITI website to create a username and password.  You will need to select IU as your institution, and use the specific campus on which your research will be conducted.
    • If you select “yes” you will be prompted to enter your IU Network ID and Password. 
  • Once you access your CITI account:
    • You will select “Add a course or update your learner groups”.
    • For Human Subjects/IRB requirements, you need to select your course under the human subjects research question.
      • NOTE: This is question #1 for all IU campuses.
        • For the other education opportunity questions (Responsible Conduct, Good Clinical Practices) you can select, “no”, or “Not at this time, Thank you.”
        • *** The CITI Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course is provided as a reference and education tool only.  Completion of the GCP course does not fulfill the Human Subjects/IRB education requirements.
    • Select the course that correlates with your type of research. CITI will automatically generate the modules you are required to complete. 
      • NOTE: For Researchers, you will select either “Social/Behavioral Researchers” or “Biomedical Researcher”. 
        • If you generally submit to IRB-01, you would select “Social/Behavioral”. 
        • If you generally submit to IRB-02, IRB-03, IRB-04, and IRB-05 you should select “Biomedical”.
    • Hit continue to return to your main menu screen.
    • The modules you’re required to complete will be listed under the learner group in “My courses”. 
    • Select “Enter” under the “Status” Column of your course to enter.
    • Complete the Integrity Assurance module. You can’t start the modules without agreeing to this.
    • Complete all required modules.
    • Use the “View/Update your Learner Group” link to select or modify your learner group.
    • To add optional modules:
      • On the main screen, under “Indiana University-Indianapolis Learner Utilities” select “Optional Modules”.
      • From the list of optional modules, select the ones that apply to the type of research you conduct and/or the research population you work with.
    • Once you complete the course, Completion information will be captured by the CITI database and will be accessible to authorized Human Subjects Office staff.
    • To view your completion history and obtain a certificate of completion, follow the link on the Main Menu to “Print” your Completion Report. 
    • Print and retain a copy for your records.
