What do I do if the parents consent for the minor to participate and the minor does not provide assent?

It is the hope of the Board that parents and children will be encouraged to talk about and discuss the study before making a decision. Therefore, the decision made will be a joint one, and the instance described above will be a rare possibility. However, if this situation does occur, in most cases, the parents’ decision will rule whether the minor participates in the study. An exception to that is if the minor is able, under applicable law, to provide consent for himself/herself. In that instance, the minor’s decision will govern.
