What is the overall life of a protocol?

Once approved a protocol can remain active for three years. Continuing Reviews are required at the end of year 1 and year 2.

Principle Investigators should not assume that their 3-year renewal protocol will automatically receive approval; many factors may have changed since the last review, including federal animal welfare regulations, societal expectations, and the composition of the committee. In addition, it is likely that the investigator will incorporate anticipated changes in the protocol at this time.
