ORA FAQs
Do I have to take the test and document human subjects education if NIH funding is not involved?

Yes. All Indiana University researchers are required to complete the CITI training. This requirement is intended for everyone having direct contact with research subjects at IU campuses or their affiliates. This requirement may include, but is not limited to, principal and co-investigators, coordinators, faculty sponsors, and students. Please note that the research offices will not be able to process paperwork until this requirement has been fulfilled by all investigators listed on the summary safeguard statement.

To register for CITI training, please visit the Educational Opportunities CITI page.

For VA investigators, IU will accept completion of the VA CITI in lieu of the IU CITI course. Please submit the VA CITI completion report to the IU Human Subjects office with the study submission as proof of completion.

For non-affiliated investigators, IU will accept completion of approved Human Subjects training/education from the non-affiliated investigator’s institution in lieu of completion of the IU CITI modules. This would include completion of CITI at another institution, or completion of another education mechanism at the investigator’s institution. If a non-affiliated investigator has not completed Human Subjects training/education at another institution, they would need to complete IU CITI modules to meet the education requirement.
