A light aluminum ring is suspended as a pendulum. As a bar magnet is moved toward the ring, the magnetic field induces currents in the ring which repel it from the magnet. When the bar magnet is moved away, the ring is attracted to the magnet. One then reverses the polarity of the magnet and repeats the observations. The induced currents are such that they always oppose the motion. Note that the forces are present only when motion is actually taking place.
