Using Sakai 2.8, how do I grade an assessment?

Note: To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles. For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles: Overview.

Tests & Quizzes automatically grades questions with predefined answers, such as multiple choice. However, it will not automatically send a score of zero to the gradebook when a student does not take an assessment; use the grade adjustment instructions below to manually assign the score.

On this page:

Grading individual questions

To grade an assessment with questions requiring instructor evaluation:

  1. In the menubar of the relevant site, click Tests & Quizzes.

  2. Under "Published Assessments", find the assessment you wish to grade. Next to its title, click  --Select Action-- , and then click Scores.

  3. The Total Scores screen will open, displaying a list of student submissions. Choose from the following options to grade the assessment:

    • To grade by student: Click the name of a student or a Submission ID to open an individual submission. On this page you will see the questions and the student's response to each question.

    • To grade by question: Click Questions if you would like to view and grade all student responses to a single question. You can click the question links near the top of the screen to select the question you would like to grade. This method allows you to quickly compare how all students answered a specific question.

    • To grade only ungraded questions: Click Ungraded if you would like to view and grade all student responses to a single question. Questions that have already been graded will not be shown.
  4. For each question enter a point value and, if desired, use the comment field to add feedback.

  5. When finished, click Update to return to the Total Scores page.

Adjusting automatically generated scores

You can change the score of any student on any assessment as described below. When a student does not take an assessment, this is the only way to assign that student a score. You cannot edit assessment scores directly in Gradebook.

  1. In the menubar of the relevant site, click Tests & Quizzes.

  2. Under "Published Assessments", find the assessment you wish to grade. Next to its title, click  --Select Action-- , and then click Scores.

  3. You will see a list of students' scores. In the "Adjustment" column, type a positive or negative value for each student whose grade you want to adjust.

Note: You will see "0.0" in the "Adjustment" column for every student who did complete the quiz, but you should ignore these; the tool will only update the values that you enter manually.

  4. Click Update.
